Trafficking - in Macedonia:

Trafficking in human beings, is a global issue which is also reflected in the Republic of Macedonia. It appears in different shapes and has as its objective the exploitation of its victim for the greatest financial profit possible.

The scope of trafficking in human beings in Macedonia has changed over the years. In the previous period Macedonia was country of transit and destination of victims, mainly women and was primarily for the purposes of sexual exploitation. In the field of illegal migration, the territory of the Republic of Macedonia has been used as a transit country, with the most frequently used illegal passages.

The present situation has changed. Macedonia has also become a country of origin. Internal assessments and reports from NGOs indicate that in Macedonia very serious is the problem of internal trafficking i.e. women, mostly under the age of 18 from the eastern, underdeveloped regions of the country are recruited and taken to the western part of the country, where, by means of various false promises of employment in catering companies, are sold, often multiple times or forced into prostitution. Victims are no longer to be identified in bars but in rented or private flats, houses and summerhouses, massage or beauty salons.
